If you’ve served in a specific ministry for any length of time, it easy to “grow weary in your well doing.” You get bored, you get tired, and you lose your motivation. Before long, you go from truly participating in ministry to merely spectating.

Becoming stagnant like this can be one of the biggest curses to those serving in the church. One of the most typical causes of this is when your dreams for bigger, brighter days just don’t happen. Maybe the new equipment that you needed was too big for the budget. Perhaps your exciting new idea was shot down by a leader. Or I think all churches are plagued by that one person who thinks their spiritual gift is to tell you how to do your job better. All of these things can take a toll on you and your drive to move forward to greater things.

Whether you’re paid or a volunteer, there are some days in ministry when you feel like packing up and going home.

Just in case no one has told you in awhile—you’re important. What you do in ministry is important. Sometimes we find ourselves in places, in situations, or around people that make you feel like throwing in the towel, but you must remember that God really does want to use you to do great things. To transform that awesome truth from an idea into a reality in your life requires that you change your perspective on your situation.

Rather than looking at the things you can’t do, focus on little things that you can do. What would happen if you made a commitment to do one small thing to improve your ministry each week? It could be something as simple as correcting any misspelled words in your song database or organizing your media library. Maybe give your media booth a good cleaning or take your volunteers out for an appreciation lunch?

The list of little things could go on and on, but after awhile, these small acts of excellence will add up to a big change in your ministry. I think you’ll be surprised at how well it will begin to inspire movement in your stagnant environment.

So go ahead. Make a list of small things that you can do to make your ministry better. Start tiny and knock out at least one per week. And be sure to let me know if you see a difference!
